How to Change Nameservers

If your hosting company requires you to use their nameservers, or if you run your own DNS server, you'll need to change the authoritative nameservers for your domain.

Warning

Changing nameservers from Porkbun to another DNS host will usually break any Porkbun-hosted services such as web hosting and email. Make sure your new DNS host is set up to answer requests for these services before you change nameservers.

How to Change Nameservers to Another DNS Host

1
Log in. You should arrive at the Domain Management screen. If you're already logged in, click on ACCOUNT in the top-right corner and select "Domain Management."

2
Locate the domain for which you wish to change nameservers. Click the "Details" drop-down button to the far right of the domain name and locate the "Nameservers" field, then click the edit icon.

3
A pop-up window should appear with your current nameservers. This list specifies which DNS servers will be queried when a user looks up your domain. If you’ve never changed this setting before, the list is pre-populated with Porkbun nameservers.

Tip

If you are switching from an external provider's nameservers to Porkbun's nameservers, this menu will look slightly different. You can review our guide on changing to Porkbun's default nameservers for more details.

4
Remove all of the existing entries. Add the desired nameservers, one per line. Click the "Submit" button to save your changes.

You may see an additional message asking you to confirm whether you want to change nameservers. To fully submit and save the change, click on "Submit" one more time.

That's it! You've changed your domain's nameservers successfully. In the domain's "Details" menu (shown in step 2), you will now see the new set of nameservers applied to your domain.

Note

Changes to your authoritative nameservers will take up to 48 hours to propagate worldwide. In practice, most places will see the change within a few hours. To track nameserver propagation, you can use a free service like www.whatsmydns.net and select NS as the record type.

Please note that if you wish to use an authoritative nameserver that is tied to the domain name itself (such as ns1.yourdomain.com), you'll first need to create a "glue" record in your domain's settings under the Details menu. This guide explains more.
