How to Set Up Passwordless Login on Your Porkbun Account

Passwordless login is all the rage these days. Here at Porkbun, we added support in May 2023, becoming one of the first domain name registrars to support it.

Why Use Passwordless Login?

So what’s the big deal with passwordless login using a passkey, you ask? Passkeys are described as a safer and easier-to-use alternative to passwords. They’re tied to a physical device such as your phone, laptop, or a removable USB key you can take with you.

Passkeys authenticate via a cryptographic exchange that prevents brute force login attempts, phishing schemes, and other forms of attacks. Most often, passkey login relies on biometrics (like facial recognition or a fingerprint), a PIN, or physical piece of hardware. The FIDO Alliance website provides more information on passkeys and their benefits.

Setting up Passwordless Login at Porkbun

For Porkbun users who already have two-factor authentication (2FA) configured with a hardware security key, such as a Yubikey, or device-based biometrics like TouchID or Windows Hello, we're excited to offer passwordless login.

If you do not already have 2FA set up, you can read check out our 2FA setup guide for more details on doing that. As a reminder, passwordless login does not yet support authenticator apps or email 2FA, it only supports hardware security keys.

Once you have 2FA configured on your Porkbun account with a hardware security key, we're ready to dive into setting up passwordless login.

1

While logged into your Porkbun account, go to the Settings/Billing page from the ACCOUNT dropdown and scroll down until you get to the Account Security Settings section. This will contain the 2FA and login options. If you have a hardware security key set up, you should see it listed in the box labeled 2FA - Security Key.

Once you find this, go ahead and click the red toggle for Passwordless Login (passkeys).

2

After clicking to toggle, it will turn green. This means that Passwordless Login is now enabled.

3

Now the next time that you log in to your account, you should be prompted to use Passwordless Login. If you do not see this, you may need to manually refresh the page.

4

Once you enter your username and click the Continue button, you will be prompted to use your hardware key to complete authentication and log in. Once you activate your hardware key, you will be logged in normally and should be all set!
