How to Update Your DNS Resolvers in Windows 11 to Use Google DNS

It's possible for circumstances to arise when your Internet Service Provider's default DNS resolvers, which are the servers your computer uses to obtain DNS records, may not correctly resolve all DNS records or not update changes in a timely manner. One option to work around this is to change the the DNS resolvers that your computer is set to use.

1

The first step is to open the 'Network & Internet' panel from the Windows 11 Settings app. An easy way to reach this is to right-click on the Start button and then choose the 'Network Connections' option from the list that pops up.

Right-click the Start button and choose Network Connections

2

That will open the 'Network and Internet' panel in the Windows Settings app. From here you will need to choose whichever network adapter you are connected to, either Wi-Fi or Ethernet. In this example we're using Wi-Fi

Choose the network adapter you are using, either Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

3

On that page, click on the Network you are connected to.

Click the name of the network you are connected to

4

From there, find the row labeled 'DNS server assignment' and click the 'Edit' button to the right.

Find the DNS server assignment row and click Edit

5

In the window that opens, you'll need to change the first drop down from 'Automatic' to 'Manual'. Then toggle On the IPv4 setting and fill it out with the Google DNS setting shown below and then click the 'Save' button after those have been set.

Preferred DNS: 8.8.8.8

DNS over HTTPS: On

Alternate DNS: 8.8.4.4

DNS over HTTPS: On

That's it! After clicking 'Save' your computer will now use Google DNS for resolving DNS lookups and you can close the Settings window.
