How to connect your domain to Bluesky
Wanting to verify your Bluesky account with your custom domain registered on Porkbun? Look no further! We'll show you how in this quick guide.
Before making any changes to your domain on Porkbun, you'll want to get the domain added on Bluesky's end first. This guide from their website will show you how to start the process of using the domain as your Bluesky username.
Once you've reached the portion of that guide that provides you with a verification DNS record, here's what you'll need to do:
- 1
- Take note of the values in the DNS record that Bluesky provides you. That record should look something like this:
- 2
- Log in to Porkbun. You should arrive at the Domain Management screen. If you're already logged in, click on ACCOUNT in the top-right corner and select Domain Management.
- 3
- Locate the domain you're connecting, then click the Details button to the far right of the domain name. In the domain's Details area, click on the "Edit" option next to "DNS Records".
- 4
- You can add the DNS record manually here if you want to, but the easiest method is to scroll down to the "Quick DNS Config" section and click on the button for Bluesky. On the next menu that comes up, add the information from the DNS record as it was provided to you by Bluesky.
- 5
- Click on "Submit" to finish creating the DNS record. You can then scroll down on the DNS records menu and see the record you've added.
- 6
- Navigate back to Bluesky and click on "Verify DNS Record" to complete the domain connection.
⚠️️ Note
Newly created DNS records generally propagate within 5 or 10 minutes. If Bluesky states there's an error detecting your DNS record, you'll want to check back again after a few more minutes have passed. If the error persists, review the end of this guide for more information on how to resolve that issue.
- 7
- You should be all set! Check your Bluesky profile to make sure your handle was updated properly. You're now using your domain as your Bluesky username. Review the end of the guide on Bluesky (linked at the top of this article) to see more information about using subdomains or other methods to set up multiple users with the same domain name.
Why is Bluesky saying they can't detect my record?
If you've waited some time for the DNS record to propagate and Bluesky still isn't able to verify it, first you'll want to double check that you've formatted the record exactly as it was provided to you. If that doesn't fix the problem, check whether or not your domain is using Porkbun's default DNS nameservers.
If you're using third party DNS nameservers from another provider, you'll need to add Bluesky's DNS record on that provider's end instead, then it should start working. If you run into any issues with this process or have any questions, feel free to reach out to our support team for assistance.
