Can I Edit or Exchange My Domain Name?
So you registered a domain name… but there’s a typo. Or maybe you’ve had second thoughts and want a different extension. We get it, mistakes happen. But here’s what you need to know:
Domains Are “As-Is” Products
When you register a domain name through Porkbun (or any registrar), you’re essentially purchasing a unique slice of the internet. Once it’s registered, that domain becomes yours, and only yours, for the term you selected. Think of it like printing a custom t-shirt with your design: once it’s made, it can’t be un-printed or reprinted with a different word.
In short: domain names are non-editable and non-exchangeable.
If you meant to register examplecompany.com but snagged exampelcompany.com instead, you can’t just swap it out. The only option is to cancel the domain (more on that below) and register the correct one.
Can I Cancel and Get a Refund?
Porkbun has a strict no-refunds policy when it comes to domain registrations. This is industry standard, and it’s tied to how the global domain name system works. That said, we’re not totally heartless.
If your registration is less than 5 days old, there's a possibility we can request a cancellation and refund on your behalf. We say “possibility” because it depends on a few factors, like the domain extension (TLD) and the specific policies of the domain registry. Some TLDs allow a short refund grace period, others do not.
To check if you’re eligible, contact our support team right away and include:
- The domain name in question.
- A brief explanation of the situation.
Confirm the domain name in question again and that you have read this and understand that this domain name will be deleted, you will lose any and all access and rights to it, and it will become available for registration by someone else.
We’ll take a look and let you know what’s possible.
