How long will it take for my brand new domain to start resolving?

Good question! The answer is "probably instantly, but potentially up to 48 hours". Read on for more information.

What's the maximum time it could take?

48 hours. If you are using Porkbun's default DNS nameservers on your domain, your domain will likely start resolving instantly. You can edit your domain's DNS records as needed, and your new records will start working as expected within a few minutes.

If you are instead using a different set of DNS nameservers, such as nameservers given to you by a third-party hosting provider, your domain may take up to 48 hours to switch over to those nameservers and begin resolving worldwide.

It's been over 48 hours and my domain still doesn't resolve. Why?

Don't panic! There are a few reasons this could be happening. Here are the most common:

  • It's possible the nameservers you are using for your domain are not configured properly, causing DNS requests to your domain to fail. You can usually confirm this is the issue by checking an online tool such as dnschecker.org. Search for your domain and be sure to choose the "NS" option to check if your assigned nameservers are resolving properly.

If your domain's nameservers aren't responding, it's likely that your hosting provider hasn't finished configuring the nameservers to respond as "authoritative" for your domain. You can always confirm this by reaching out to Porkbun's support team, but this specific issue will ultimately need to be fixed on your hosting provider's end.

  • Your domain could have a "server hold" EPP status on it, preventing it from resolving. You can review more about what a server hold is on ICANN's website. This issue is usually resolved by directly contacting the registry (what's that?) that operates your domain extension.
  • It's possible that your website is resolving properly, but it's missing a valid SSL certificate, causing a "not secure" error to show up when trying to access the site. If you're using an external hosting provider, they'll most likely be in charge of fixing this issue for you, but these two guides will explain more about how to resolve SSL issues:
