How to Fix the "Could not add DNS record: A CNAME or ALIAS record with that host already exists" Error

If you encounter this error when trying to connect your domain to a hosting provider or other service, don't panic! It's a common issue that's super easy to fix. We'll show you how.

If you recently registered your domain with us (or you've never connected your domain to a hosting provider before), it's likely that the domain still has a couple of Porkbun's default DNS records attached to it. These records will have a value of "pixie.porkbun.com". They're in control of the default parking page that you see on Porkbun domains:

1
If you aren't there already, navigate to the page where you can edit your domain's DNS records.

2
Since you're trying to bring your site online with a hosting provider, you don't need our default DNS records anymore! That means you'll want to delete any DNS records pointing to "pixie.porkbun.com":

3
After you've deleted those DNS records, you should be able to add the DNS records from your hosting provider that originally caused the error:
They should look something like this, depending on who's hosting your site.

VoilĂ ! You have successfully deleted Porkbun's parking page DNS records and replaced them with the records given to you by your host. Depending on your provider, your site should come online within 24-48 hours assuming it's configured correctly. If the site doesn't come online on its own, feel free to contact our Support team for further assistance.

What if I don't see any "pixie.porkbun.com" DNS records?

In this situation, it's likely that your domain has old records from a different hosting provider. If you've switched hosting providers, you'll need to delete any of the DNS records associated with the old host so you can add the records from your new host. If you need any assistance or clarification with this process, please feel free to get in touch with the Support team via the Help bubble, or by sending an email to support@porkbun.com.
