How to Transfer a Domain From Gandi to Porkbun

Transferring a domain can seem intimidating, but we're here to help. We'll show you how to transfer your domain from Gandi to Porkbun. Let's get started!

Steps to transfer a domain from Gandi

1
Log in to your Gandi account and unlock your domain. This guide from Gandi's website will show you how. Depending on your particular domain, you might need to wait for email confirmation from Gandi that the domain has been unlocked.
2
Once the domain has been unlocked at Gandi, you will then need to grab the authorization code (also known as the EPP code) for your domain. You can follow this guide from Gandi to find your authorization code.
3
After getting your domain's authorization code, the next step is to initiate the transfer on Porkbun. You can go to https://porkbun.com/transfer or click on the "TRANSFER" button at the top of our website to find the page.
In the "Domain Name" field, enter your domain name (without "www" in front of it). In the "Auth Code" field, type or copy/paste the authorization code given to you by Gandi. Then, click on the "Submit" button.

4
You'll see a couple of additional options that give you control over WHOIS privacy and automatic renewal. If you want to keep your contact info private and ensure your domains renew automatically, leave these boxes blank. Click on "Add Transfers to Cart".

Warning

If you have an existing website, email service, or other DNS service set up on your domain, be aware that you might need to perform extra steps to ensure your site does not go down when the transfer completes. This guide explains more.

5
The transfer(s) will be added to your cart and you will be redirected to that page automatically. From the cart, click on "Continue to Billing" to pay for your transfers and complete the process. That's it!

How to speed up pending domain transfers from Gandi

Once the transfer is processing successfully (you can review info on checking transfer statuses here), you would typically expect to wait between 5-7 days for the transfer to complete. However, according to Gandi's guide on transferring domains to other registrars, depending on your particular domain you may be able to speed the process up by approving the transfer via email.

Our recommendation is to wait for an email from Gandi to see if they will allow you to "approve" the transfer, which will get it to go through almost instantly. If you don't receive that email, you may need to wait the full 5-7 days for the transfer to complete, or you can try contacting Gandi's support team for assistance with expediting the transfer.

Possible issues when transferring a domain

  • Was your domain first registered fewer than 60 days ago? If so, you’ll need to wait until the 60-day mark before transferring it to Porkbun. We feel your pain, but our hands are tied.
  • Was your domain transferred fewer than 60 days ago? Same deal as above. ICANN rules say a domain must stay at one registrar for 60 days before it can be transferred to another.
  • Did your domain expire recently, or is it about to expire? If it’s close, you may want to renew your domain at Gandi first before transferring it to Porkbun to prevent any interruption of service. You can always contact Gandi's support team to confirm whether or not your domain will transfer to another registrar successfully.
  • Additionally, if you renew an already-expired domain at Gandi, then transfer the domain to Porkbun within 45 days, your registration may not be extended for an additional year. For more information, check out our guide "Do I Lose Domain Registration Time If I Transfer Domains?".
  • Does your domain already have more than nine years of registration? Since domains can only ever have ten years registration max, sometimes the registry won't allow transfers that already have nine years of registration.
